Originally conceived as a promotional event for the championship match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. After Foreman was injured, the event went on, presenting and promoting racial and cultural solidarity between African-American and African peoples. Performers came from across the USA and Africa, including James Brown, Bill Withers, BB King, Miriam Makeba and Tabu Ley Rochereau.
